ETA 62nd Annual General Meeting in Syracuse<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

At the 62nd Annual General Meeting of the European Tugowners Association (ETA), held in Brucoli, Italy, the ETA representatives of the GREENPORT Alliances project, joined over 140 delegates to explore the evolving role of\u00a0AI in maritime operations<\/strong>. Themed\u00a0“AI Horizons: Transforming Maritime Operations”<\/em>, the conference highlighted cutting-edge applications of artificial intelligence in port services\u2014ranging from predictive planning and vessel design to emergency response and environmental optimisation.<\/p>

Speakers from IBM, Sanmar, Webster University, and the UK SOSREP office emphasised the importance of ethical AI adoption, regulatory readiness (e.g., EU AI Act), and public-private collaboration \u2014 while also addressing AI\u2019s role in emergency response, predictive operations, and the continued need for human oversight. These insights directly support Greenports Alliances\u2019 mission to foster smart, sustainable, and resilient port ecosystems through innovation and shared knowledge.<\/p>

The event also marked a leadership transition within ETA, as Mattias Helstrom (Svitzer Sverige) was appointed Chair, supported by Holger Schwesig (Fairplay Towage) as Deputy Chair \u2014 bringing renewed momentum to collaborative efforts in the port towage community.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

GREENPORT at Oostende voor Aker: Conversations That Matter<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Oostende voor Anker, a maritime festival honouring seafaring heritage and port innovation, featured the GREENPORT project from May 22\u201325, 2025. The event was an appropriate setting to highlight our initiatives to support sustainable port operations through more intelligent sailing techniques, without the need for new ships or sophisticated technological advancements.<\/p>

The occasion generated fruitful discussions between shipowners, port experts, and the general public. Several stakeholders noted that many captains are hesitant to change their sailing routines with comments like \u201cThey\u2019ve been doing it this way for years<\/em>\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s not easy to change that mindset<\/em>\u201d. Some also expressed concerns about \u00a0the environmental cost of retiring older ships too early while others expanded the conversation by highlighting the necessity of sustainability initiatives at the societal level in all sectors.<\/p>

These candid discussions perfectly encapsulate GREENPORT’s mission that is to drive real-world change and a lasting shift in mindset, through ongoing awareness and dialogue, building momentum, one thoughtful exchange at a time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Maritime Transport and Logistics Trends Conference<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Constanta Maritime University\u2019s Maritime Transport & Logistics Trends 2025 Conference featured a workshop focused on\u00a0“Skills and Competencies for Future Careers in Maritime Transport.”<\/em>\u00a0This brought together maritime professionals, industry representatives, and academic staff to explore how education and training must evolve to meet the demands of a decarbonising and digital maritime sector.<\/p>

Last month our Project Coordinator Prof. Dr. Taner Albayrak from PRU, promoted the project at the\u00a0IAME 2025 Conference<\/strong>\u00a0in Bergen. Together with partners from MARTE: Prof. Marcello Risitano and Dr. Giuseppe La Ragione, they presented the article titled as \u201cSustainability in Maritime Education: Educators<\/em>\u2019 awareness, behavioural change approaches and challenges.\u201d This presentation ended with very good feedback from participants, leading to a positive impact through the project.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Greenport\u2019s article,\u00a0\u201cGreen Practices for Reducing Emissions in Port Services: Evidence from a Pilot Study,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0was published in the peer-reviewed journal\u00a0Sustainability<\/em>.<\/p>

This study highlights the need of training in promoting sustainable behaviour and identifies important low-emission practices in port operations, in order to improve environmental performance and marine efficiency.<\/p>
