From 13\u201317 April 2026, representatives of\u00a0Nikola Vaptsarov Zeevaartschool<\/strong>\u00a0took part in an\u00a0Erasmus+ staff week in Klaip\u0117da, Lithuania<\/strong>, combining academic exchange, networking and dissemination of results linked to the GREENPORT initiative. The visit offered a valuable opportunity to present current research, share best practices in maritime education and strengthen cooperation with international partners involved in the transition to more sustainable maritime operations.<\/p>

A key moment was participation in the international conference\u00a0\u201cMaritime, Offshore Energy and Port Logistics (MOEPL 2026)\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>on 16 April, which brought together academia, industry and institutions from across Europe to discuss maritime transport, offshore energy, port logistics, decarbonisation, digitalisation and future skills \u2014 themes closely aligned with GREENPORT\u2019s objectives on sustainability, innovation and the human dimension of port\u2011related transformation.<\/p>

The Erasmus+ week also included three Logistics students from the academy, broadening its international academic presence.\u00a0Assoc. Prof. Georgi Dimitrov<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Capt. Assist. Prof. Mihail Gachevski<\/strong>\u00a0delivered lectures on emission reduction in port regions and the use of alternative fuels in shipping, reinforcing the dissemination of GREENPORT\u2011relevant knowledge through education, practice and policy dialogue.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Students from\u00a0Piri Reis Universiteit<\/strong>\u00a0took learning beyond the classroom with a technical visit to\u00a0Sanmar Alt\u0131nova Shipyard<\/strong>\u00a0as part of the\u00a0Sustainable Maritime Operations and Greenport<\/em>\u00a0course, which continues its pilot phase this spring semester.<\/p>

During the visit, students witnessed the launch of a tugboat and had the unique opportunity to observe the world\u2019s first methanol-powered tug up close \u2014 an important milestone in the maritime industry\u2019s transition toward cleaner energy.<\/p>

Through this hands-on experience, they gained valuable insights into:<\/p>

\u2022 Sustainable shipbuilding practices and alternative fuels<\/p>

\u2022 Real-world applications of decarbonization strategies in maritime transport<\/p>

\u2022 The critical role of innovation in achieving greener ports and shipping operations<\/p>

GREENPORT\u2019s study titled \u201cA COM-B Perspective on Integrating Sustainability into Maritime Education\u201d accepted for publication<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A new study titled \u201cA COM\u2011B Perspective on Integrating Sustainability into Maritime Education<\/strong>\u201d<\/a>, jointly developed by\u00a0Piri Reis Universiteit<\/strong>,\u00a0Maritieme universiteit van Constanta\u00a0<\/strong>and the\u00a0Universiteit van Rijeka<\/strong>, has been accepted for publication in the\u00a0Scientific Journal of Maritime Research (POMORSTVO)<\/strong>\u00a0and will appear in its June 2026 issue.<\/p>

Responding to the urgent need for decarbonisation in an industry responsible for over 80% of global transport and around 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the article examines how sustainability can be better embedded into Maritime Education and Training (MET). It finds that while educators are highly motivated to include sustainability and behavioural change in their teaching, they often lack capability (training and resources) and opportunity (access to real\u2011world cases and interactive learning environments).<\/p>

The study underlines the key role of educators in shaping sustainable mindsets and practices among future maritime professionals and offers practical insights to support greener, more resilient port and shipping operations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

European Maritime Pilots Association\u2019s meeting in Ghent<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

GREENPORT Alliance was featured at the\u00a060th European Maritime Pilots Association<\/strong>\u00a0(EMPA) meeting in a panel titled \u201cHuman Capital Resilience<\/strong>.\u201d EMPA representative\u00a0Patrick Galvin<\/strong>\u00a0highlighted how behavioural change and the role of people are untapped resources for decarbonisation.<\/p>

He outlined the GREENPORT project, its progress so far, and stressed that maritime professionals can already act to cut emissions \u2014 without waiting for new technologies or fuels. His presentation sparked strong engagement, with many of the 140 attendees, mainly pilots and industry stakeholders, asking questions and signalling clear interest.<\/p>

The discussion reinforced that people will remain central to the maritime sector and that policy must be people\u2011centric, treating technology and future fuels as supportive, not primary. The meeting ended with a commitment to prioritise human capital in a rapidly changing world, recognising that true maritime resilience depends on skilled professionals in high\u2011quality jobs. \u00a0<\/p>

The takeaway was clear: putting people at the centre is essential for navigating future challenges and opportunities.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
