Welcome to our 5th newsletter! After a very busy few months we are excited to share some updates and news regarding the progress of our project over this past quarter.
Second Transactional Project Meeting
Between 17-18 March, the GREENPORT consortium met in Brussels to review project progress, exchange insights and strengthen collaboration for a greener maritime future.
The meeting encouraged open dialogue, identified key challenges, and outlined the next steps with partner feedback. It reinforced the importance of active participation and communication to sustain momentum, disseminate results and achieve the GREENPORT Project’s goals.
European Shipping Summit 2025
While in Brussels, GREENPORT Alliances attended the European Shipping Summit 2025, on 19-20 March, exploring how innovation, collaboration and sustainability can shape the future of in-port services.
Our partners ETA and EMPA hosted a workshop highlighting the vital role of human action in decarbonising port services, with support also from EuDA for the stakeholders present. The GREENPORT Alliances project aims and objectives were also presented during the event.
ETA Nautical Technical Committee Meeting
On 18 March, all GREENPORT Alliances partners joined The ETA Nautical Technical Committee meeting, where technical experts discussed industry trends, shared best practices, and reviewed the GREENPORT project’s progress.
Presentations included NAVTOR’s e-navigation solutions for safer, more energy efficient towage; the Green Marine Programme’s support for ecological transitions; an overview of the GREENPORT project by Assoc. Prof. Eker İşcioğlu, particularly the upcoming development of the three educational curricula for different stakeholders; and insights from a simulator exercise by the Antwerp Nautical Academy on the identified atomic habits in relation to energy use in tugboat operations.
The meeting allowed for collaboration with the ETA technical body to advance project goals and deliverables.
Green Fuels for Green Shipping Conference Workshop
During the ‘Green Fuels for Green Shipping’ conference, held between March 20-21, Piri Reis University’s Faculty of Law and the University of Copenhagen co-hosten a workshop where Associate Prof. Hüseyin Gençer presented his paper:
“A Bi-objective Tugboat Scheduling Model”.
Open Doors Work
On 11 April the Maritime University of Constanta hosted the 7th ‘Captain on the Ship of the Future’ competition, engaging over 60 high school students in simulator-based and hands-on activities.
The GREENPORT project was introduced, highlighting sustainable practices, green technologies, and the importance of sustainability skills for future maritime careers.
UPCOMING EVENT - MARILOG 2025 Conference
We’re pleased to announce that the GREENPORT Alliances project will be featured at MARILOG 2025!
On 30 May, from 10:30AM to 12:30PM (GMT+3), CMU will host an interactive workshop titled:
“Skills and Competencies for Maritime Transport and Logistics”.
This will be a valuable opportunity to engage with around 25 industry representatives and gather valuable input for shaping future green skills and training competencies required within the project.
New addition of the Advisory Board of Greenport
The Piri Reis University team visited the Turkish Maritime Pilots’ Association to welcome Captain Nildeniz Şütçü Şen, Türkiye’s first female pilot and first female president of the association, to the GREENPORT Advisory Board. She gladly accepted and expressed full support to the project.
Two Impactful Chapter Publications
The new book Current Topics in Maritime Transportation and Management features two chapters by Prof. Dr. Capt. Mustafa Taner Albayrak, aligning with GREENPORT Alliances goals. The chapters explore blue economy, green port technologies, carbon reduction, and digital transformation in sustainable maritime development.
