From impactful events to new partnerships, this edition highlights the significant strides we’re making to improve sustainability within port services.

Constanta Maritime University Hosts Key GREENPORT Event

On October 3rd, Constanta Maritime University gathered industry experts, port authorities, and stakeholders to explore sustainable solutions for port operations. The event focused on cutting-edge technologies such as hybrid propulsion systems, bubble systems for fuel efficiency, cold ironing practices, and alternative fuels like hydrogen.

Key outcomes:

A strong emphasis on integrating these innovations into educational programmes to prepare future maritime leaders.
Strengthened collaborations between academia, industry, and port authorities, ensuring that both environmental goals and operational safety remain top priorities.

GREENPORT and SUDEMAR: Partnering for Sustainability

At the second SUDEMAR meeting, hosted by Piri Reis University in October, alignment grew on promoting sustainable development within the maritime industry. SUDEMAR’s initiatives, including a data repository and mobile application for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) resources, directly support Greenport’s mission to drive behavioural change and reduce emissions in port operations.

Promoting Green Skills at ACI’s 30th Crew Management and HR Conference

Anna Maria Darmanin, Secretary General of the European Tugowners Association (ETA), represented Greenport at the ACI 30th Crew Management and HR Conference in London on October 16-17, 2024. With a focus on cross-cultural communication and embracing diversity, the conference addressed policy developments, technological advances, and labour shortages. Anna Maria presented Greenport’s work, highlighting how training and green skill acquisition are essential for the maritime sector’s decarbonization and attractiveness to future cadets and seafarers.

GREENPORT Showcased at Stars League Workshop

At the ‘Stars League: Erasmus+ Central Projects’ workshop hosted by Boğaziçi University and organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Directorate for EU Affairs, GREENPORT was highlighted as a best practice in Alliances for Innovation. Project Manager Prof. Dr. M. Taner Albayrak presented GREENPORT’s core objectives and strategic goals, offering insights into the project’s role in advancing sustainable practices within the maritime sector. This recognition underscores GREENPORT’s ongoing commitment to driving meaningful environmental progress.

Insights from the Sustainability Bulletin

The recent Sustainability Bulletin featured an article by Asst. Prof. Hüseyin Gençer, who explored indexes and incentives for measuring the environmental performance of ships. Developed under Greenport’s WP2, this analysis offers valuable perspectives on sustainability metrics and their role in advancing green practices across maritime operations.
