Last month, the #GreenportAlliances project team held its monthly 25th PMC meeting. The discussion focused on the project's upcoming milestones, emphasising the importance of ongoing piloting for our courses. ⭐

During this meeting, the Greenport Alliances consortium focused its discussion on the quality improvement in deliverables and provided updates on the higher education piloting, noting the completion of a full course and the importance of refining course materials. 📝

As some of the partners have concluded rounds of piloting for the HEI and VET courses, the consortium discussed ongoing preparations for other sessions as well as for the piloting of the TTT course! The TTT course is the last learning stream prepared by the #GreenportAlliances team. This will focus on the ‘Role of the Trainer’ and ‘Tools for Trainers’ to ensure sustainable and behavioural change needed in maritime settings for a greener maritime future.

Moreover, discussions about an upcoming summer school as part of the piloting process have been shared. This summer school will be held in the coming months and serves as a pillar in educating maritime students and professionals on how changes in maritime manoeuvres can result in beneficial sustainable practices for the maritime environment. Keep in touch for more information about all the upcoming plans.

We are proud to announce the successful completion of the final HEI piloting session, carried out by Piri Reis Üniversitesi using advanced simulator-based evaluations developed by GDS Engineering R&D.

Through these hands-on, immersive assessments, students gained practical experience while generating high-quality data that will support future research—particularly in monitoring, assessment, and emission-reduction strategies for port operations.

A heartfelt thanks to Prof. Dr. Ismail Çiçek, CEO of GDS Engineering R&D and Chair of the Greenport Project Advisory Board, along with the ITU research staff, for their invaluable support to the #GreenportAlliances project team and the students piloting the HEI curricula and course materials.

Together, we are shaping the future of sustainable port services. 💚🚢

Piloting for the Train-The-Trainer (TTT) course will be happening soon! ⭐

The TTT course, designed for maritime professionals features a reduction in emissions embedded through behavioural change. This month, in February, the piloting of this stream will kickstart where tools and training will be provided to instructors, trainers, and maritime educators who wish to include behavioural change into their instruction and assist pilots, tug crews, and port operators in lowering emissions in their day-to-day operations. 🌊

Training for this course will be divided into two: simulator training and real-scenario training, happening at Port of Aveiro. To monitor this piloting, we will be providing insights about real air emissions in tugboats - before and after training, and data of CO2, NOx and SO2.

This will be aimed to motivate crew members and students to adopt energy-efficient procedures in all tug and pilot jobs for a safer and greener maritime environment. 🌱🚢

In continuation to our partner’s responses, Mladen and Sanjin explain what they are looking forward to the most within #GreenportAlliances! ⚓

On behalf of UNIRI, they explain that they are “ most looking forward to developing innovative educational materials that will directly impact port practices. We are especially interested in the possibility of integrating our existing research on the sustainability of Croatian marinas and port systems into new curricula being developed for higher education and vocational training.” 🌱

Mladen and Sanjin explained that they are also expecting this project to “strengthen our ties with industry and to facilitate knowledge transfer that will have a tangible impact on reducing emissions in ports.”🌬️📉

Meet Sanjin Valčić and Mladen Jardas, our project partners from the University of Rijeka – Faculty of Maritime Studies Rijeka (UNIRI). ⭐

For them, Greenport represents “a natural extension of our longstanding commitment to the sustainable development of the maritime sector.” Being one of Croatia’s largest faculties in the field of maritime sciences, Greenport enables UNIRI to “bridge theory and practice in green port technologies.” 🖥️🚢

“It is also an opportunity to strengthen our role within the international academic and research community, particularly in the context of our ongoing research on the “green port” concept already being implemented in Croatian ports” - a success of our collaboration. 🤝

As part of the piloting phase of the GREENPORT Higher Education Institution (HEI) course “Sustainable Maritime Operations and Green Port”, we were pleased to host Veysel Sekin, Operations Chief at YILPORT Gebze, as a guest speaker. 📣

During the session, Mr. Sekin provided valuable insights into YILPORT Holding’s global port and terminal operations, highlighting how operational efficiency, digitalization, and sustainability-oriented practices are being integrated into modern port management. Drawing on real-life operational experience, he illustrated how ports can play a critical role in reducing environmental impact while maintaining high performance standards. 🌱📈

By sharing concrete examples from YILPORT’s practices, the session encouraged students to critically reflect on the behavioral dimension of sustainability, emphasizing how everyday operational decisions can contribute to greener and more responsible maritime operations. This industry–academia interaction not only enriched the course content but also strengthened students’ behavioral change intentions toward a cleaner and more sustainable maritime future. 🚢

We sincerely thank Veysel Sekin for his valuable contribution to the GREENPORT HEI course and for inspiring the next generation of maritime professionals!

Greenport highlighted in the 8th APIBARRA Conference Celebrating 30 Years of History and Debates the Future of Pilotage.

On November 19, 2025, the Association of Bar and Port Pilots (APIBARRA) hosted its 8th Conference at the Infante D. Henrique Auditorium in the Port of Leixões (APDL), themed “30 Years of APIBARRA: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, What Future?”. 🤩

This event celebrated three decades of dedication to safe and efficient navigation in Portuguese ports. With over 100 attendees, including both national and international experts, the conference offered an ideal platform to discuss digital transformation, the sustainability of pilotage services, and international collaboration. 🌱

EMPA President Migeul Vieira de Castro, also the President of APIBARRA, highlighted EMPA's role in the Greenport Alliance project, emphasising the importance of sustainable practices within the port sector. The Greenport Alliance project aims to reduce emissions in ports by promoting behavioural change through training, leading to immediate reductions in GHG emissions. 📉💨

Last month, the Greenport Alliances team met at NVNA, in Varna and held the 24th PMC meeting where discussions on project progress and way forward was conducted amongst the partners. NVNA also demonstrated their simulators within the academy. ⚓

A highlight of the discussion was the piloting of the course material at the project partner entities and the evaluation exercise thereafter. Our project partners have presented the current piloting methods, and agreed on the implementation dates and methods for all the 3 streams - VET, HEI and TTT courses. The training materials have been developed to provide efficient results in reducing CO2 emissions. The training materials were demonstrated during the visit to non-piloting partners, whilst emphasising the importance of collaboration in this industry for greater sustainable port services. 🚢

This meeting also resulted in new project elements - apart from the behavioural change, the end users values will also be measured during piloting, to distinguish key value indicators. Port sustainability will always be one of our objectives, but the pilot captains and crew’s safety is our top priority! ⭐
