In conclusion, with Professor Marco Ferretti and his colleagues at MAR.TE, we asked them “How can Greenport Alliances make a difference?”⭐
They responded highlighting that this project makes a difference because it “approaches sustainability through an integrated and participatory model. The collective identification of sustainable practices and the development of an innovative, digital, and modular training framework, designed for both current and future port operators, are the cornerstones of a project that tackles a complex challenge: advancing sustainability in a strategic and multifaceted sector like ports.”
Within Greenport Alliances, their goal is to strengthen the culture of sustainability in ports by focusing on people - “training them, raising their awareness, and empowering them, because the ecological transition is not driven by technology alone, but also by the skills, awareness, and daily commitment of those working in the field.”

As we continue insights about MAR.TE’s experience within this project, we now focus on what they are looking forward to the most in the Greenport project. 🚀
MAR.TE state that they are looking forward mostly for the opportunity to “translate best practices and existing case studies into concrete actions that advance sustainability in the technical-nautical services sector. Analyses have shown that even small operational changes can lead to significant reductions in emissions during port support activities.”
Their commitment is to turn this evidence into targeted training programs capable of making a real impact on the ground: equipping operators with practical, change-oriented tools so that sustainability becomes an integral part of daily port operations.

Meet Professor Marco Ferretti, the President of MAR.TE. ⭐️
When asking MAR.TE what Greenport Alliances means to them, they explained that this project “represents a genuine partnership that actively contributes to the ecological transition of ports. It unites expertise, experience, and vision from the worlds of education, research, and industry to address the sustainability transformation of the often-overlooked port services sector.”
For MAR.TE, as a public-private research organisation operating in the field of maritime logistics, Greenport is as an “opportunity to advance scientific and management approaches that can positively shape the daily practices of operators, offering concrete, measurable solutions for reducing emissions.” 🛥️

The Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy hosted the Erasmus+ Staff Week from 7th - 11th July 2025. A number of lecturers, coordinators and administrative staff from 13 different universities across Europe, participated in seminars, training and technical workshops, alongside other activities during the week. ⭐️
The event took place during the third module of the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Program (BIP). Participants from diverse countries attended both online and in-person training for cybersecurity, lectures and lab visits.
A key highlight was the presentation of the #GreenportAlliances project - in which sustainability, behavioural change in maritime operations and digitalisation were discussed. During this event, participants had the opportunity to explore how Greenport Alliances promotes practical solutions for reducing emissions in port services, while integrating the latest digital tools and international cooperation into training programs. This brought up strong interest for Greenport’s alignment with the European green policies and its use of innovative tools.🚢

The #GREENPORT Project mainly focused on the behavioural change of port operations staff will also consider the outcomes of the similar projects dealing with sustainable port operations from technological perspectives.
In this context, CO₂ emissions calculator that was developed in the project (A-AAGORA) by the GREENPORTS Project Partner Port of Aveiro, will be utilized to show the impact of different fuels across vessels, trucks, and equipment in the logistics chain which aims to raise awareness of the use of eco-friendly fuels. The calculator will be utilized in the GREENPORT training programs to demonstrate the importance of human-technology interaction in reducing emissions for sustainable port operations.

The University of Rijeka (UNIRI) is actively collaborating in the advancement of the project , contributing to the development of the innovative educational pathways that promote behavioural change in port service operations.🚢
The goal? To create impactful academic sound learning content that supports the reduction in emissions in the short- to medium-term — proactively prior to being bound by specific legislation or await new advancements in technologies.
UNIRI is actively involved in defining learning structures and drafting high-quality, academically relevant materials, including syllabi, case studies, and practical examples.
These resources will target:
- Future maritime professionals studying at higher education institutions,
- Current port and maritime workers already active in the field,
- And the educators and trainers who support both groups.
Through close collaboration with project partners from industry, academia, and professional associations, we are co-creating content that supports a shift in attitudes and practices, leading to more fuel-efficient and sustainable port services. ⚓️

Anna Maria and Juan believe that “by promoting green skills among captains, crews, and cadets and encouraging the adoption of behavioural change practices within the port services sector and nautical education institutions, this initiative supports the industry's journey through the green transition.”
They concluded by saying that “together, these efforts will help the sector meet the growing demands of a more sustainable maritime industry and a climate-conscious society and at the same time, open new opportunities for collaboration between industry and academia.” 🤝

As we continue with insights about Anna Maria’s and Juan Elias’s experience within the project, we now focus on their ambitions for Greenport.
On behalf of the European Tugowners Association, they explained that they are looking forward to putting the project’s results and deliverables into practice - “particularly testing how crews and cadets respond to the new curriculum and learning materials”. They added “ we are eager to receive the support of the port towage sector in adopting behavioral change strategies as a practical means to reduce its carbon footprint.” ⭐️
They concluded by saying that they aim to “strengthen collaboration between industry, ports, and academia to foster the continuous exchange of best practices.”
